Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, well known for its artistic heritage, the great canal system and narrow canal houses with a big variety of facades. These are legacies of Amsterdam's 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and modern art at the Stedelijk Museum. Cycling is the character of Amsterdam, and there are numerous bike paths.

As the commercial and financial capital of the Netherlands and Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities study group. Amsterdam is also the cultural capital of Holland. Many large Dutch institutions and companies have based their headquarters in Amsterdam, and 7 of the world's 500 largest companies, which includes Philips and ING, are based in the capital of the Netherlands. In Amsterdam is also based the Amsterdam World Trade Center: WTC and the South East (business) area of Amsterdam represented by the VAZO.

In 2012, the Dutch capital was ranked the 2nd best city to live in by the Economist Intelligence Unit and 12th worldwide on quality of living for environment and infrastructure. This capital was ranked 3rd in innovation by the Australian innovation agency in their Innovation Cities Index of 2009.

The Amsterdam seaport remains the second in the Netherlands, and the 5th largest seaport in Europe.

The Netherlands is a country in North West Europe and borders in the east to Germany, south to Belgium and on the east coast to the North Sea. In the North are the beautiful West Frisian islands.
