Can you tell me out of your cheaper car hire options which car is most economical; on fuel?
Not really sorry, I am in a central location. But you can go pretty much by Mini Economy or Petrol v Diesel as in some countries diesel is more expensive than petrol.

Petrol is more expensive than Diesel in Spain, that I do know. Petrol 1.70 Diesel 1.50 more or less.

cheaper just to go to airport and book there?
Book online but consider the airport as there are always more options and cars available. So far as I know, the locations at Santander Port are open just in the afternoons.
